An Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) or Patent Forman Ovale (PFO) closure is minimally invasive treatment to close a hole between the upper two heart chambers. Everyone is born with this hole, which keeps blood from circulating to the lungs before a baby is born. Usually, this hole closes shortly after birth, when a baby's lungs begin functioning.
An ASD/PFO occurs when the hole doesn't seal as it should. Most ASD/PFOs don't need to be closed. Most ASD/PFOs cause no symptoms or complications. Larger ASD/PFOs may cause stroke. People with symptomatic or large ASD/PFOs may benefit from closure.
An ASD/PFO closure is a minimally invasive catheter based procedure without the need for any incisions. Typically patients return home the same day without the need for an overnight stay.
